Performed during the summer holidays 2005 in Croftlands Community Centre.

Landlubbers

Things you might need to know!

Basic Background:

The Landlubbers are pirates that have decided to go straight. They do this by burying all their treasure and weapons on an island and they then become Landlubbers. The pirate story is delivered by a narrator and a series of still photographs on the screen. The holiday club is based on the letter Paul wrote to the Philippians. There is a DVD with the material however we didn't use it as it was a bit heavy for the children and didn't make a lot of sense visually as there was a mix of bible time costumes and a stage set of a modern house. The bible story was brought out during a conversation with one of our puppets. The children are given clues each day which will lead them around the treasure map, Captain Yo-Ho (Sarah) and Heave-Ho (Mark) with a little help from Captain Book and the children need to solve the clue and draw on the treasure map. The treasure is left until the last day.

Themes for the week

Day 1 Prisoners Post

Aims for today:

  • To discover who Paul was and what sort of a person he was, setting the scene for the week. This will introduce Philippians 1: 1-14
  • To make the children feel welcome and comfortable.

Day 2 Skull Hill

Aims for today:

  • To discover who Jesus is by looking at Philippians 2:1-11 – He lived on earth, he performed miracles, and He was blameless.
  • To find out that He was killed, but came back to life again after three days, and that this was part of God's great plan.

Day 3 The Light

Aim for today:

  • To show that although God wants to forgive us for the bad things we've done, He also wants us to stop doing them. In a world where lots of people don't know Jesus we should shine out like lights for Him, as we read in Philippians 2:12-16.

Day 4 Keep Going

Aims for today:

  • To show that following Jesus isn't the end of the journey – it's just the beginning, focusing on Philippians 3:8-16.
  • To help children make a step of commitment to follow Jesus and join the race.

Day 5 Shiver my Timbers

Aims for today:

  • To draw together the theme of the week, challenging the children to become or go on as followers of Jesus.
  • To discover the treasure –“Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have given up everything else and counted it all as rubbish. All I want is Christ” Philippians 3:8
  • To explore Paul's exhortation:'Don't worry about anything, but pray about everything' as Philippians 4:1-9 is explored.
